IV Hydration: When Water Alone Isn't Enough
We all know we should drink more water — but did you know that hydration is about more than just water? True hydration happens at a cellular level, and that's where electrolytes come in.
Why Electrolytes Matter More Than You Think
When you drink plain water, it has to pass through your digestive system before it can be absorbed. And without electrolytes — minerals like sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride — much of that water simply passes through without being retained where your body needs it.
Electrolytes act like a key, helping water move into your cells and stay there. They regulate fluid balance, support nerve and muscle function, and keep your heart rhythm steady. This is why an electrolyte-balanced fluid hydrates the body more effectively than water alone — and why IV hydration, which delivers fluid and electrolytes directly into the bloodstream with 100% absorption, can make such a noticeable difference when your body is depleted.
Who Can Benefit From IV Hydration?
Most healthy people can stay well hydrated by drinking fluids. But for some, oral hydration just doesn't cut it. IV hydration can be especially helpful for people who:
Can't tolerate oral fluids well due to gut issues — conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, gastroparesis, or ongoing nausea can make it hard to drink enough.
Have poor oral intake — whether due to illness, reduced appetite, or simply struggling to keep fluids down.
Are experiencing hyperemesis — severe, persistent vomiting and nausea in pregnancy can quickly lead to dehydration. Community-based IV hydration can help manage symptoms early and, in many cases, help keep mums-to-be comfortable at home and out of hospital, while keeping bub hydrated too.
Have a history of gastric bypass or other bariatric surgery — altered anatomy can reduce how much fluid the gut can absorb, making dehydration a common ongoing challenge.
Are elderly — older adults often have a reduced sense of thirst and are more vulnerable to dehydration. Because dehydration is a common cause of dizziness and low blood pressure, restoring hydration can reduce dizziness — and with it, the risk of falls.
Simple, Safe and Effective
IV hydration is one of the most well-established treatments in medicine. Delivered by experienced registered nurses in the comfort of your own home, it's a simple and effective way to restore fluid and electrolyte balance — often within an hour.
Many of our clients also tell us that being properly hydrated helps them feel more energised, think more clearly, and even notice healthier-looking skin. While everyone's experience is different, it's amazing what your body can do when it has the hydration it needs.
Is IV Hydration Right for You?
IV hydration isn't suitable for everyone. To make sure it's safe and appropriate for you, every client has a review with one of our registered nurses before treatment. This includes a health assessment and screening for any conditions that may make IV fluids unsuitable.
For example, IV hydration is generally not recommended for people with congestive heart failure, kidney disease requiring fluid restriction, or anyone at risk of fluid overload — in these cases, extra fluid can place strain on the heart and lungs.
If you're unsure whether IV hydration is right for you, that's exactly what our nursing review is for. We'll take the time to understand your health history and, where needed, can liaise with your GP or specialist.
