Iron infusion

About our Iron Infusions

Iron infusions are medical procedures in which iron is administered directly into a person's bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line. They are typically used to treat iron deficiency anaemia when oral iron supplements are not effective or not tolerated well. Prior blood tests need to be obtained to determine your current iron level before receiving an infusion.

The price for an unfunded mobile iron infusion is $379, or for funded is $279 inc gst.

A call out fee may apply.

Here are some of the benefits of iron infusions:

  1. Rapid Improvement: Iron infusions can quickly raise a person's iron levels, leading to faster relief from symptoms of iron deficiency anemia. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who need to improve their iron levels swiftly, such as those with severe anemia or those who have not responded well to oral iron supplements.

  2. Higher Absorption: Some people have difficulty absorbing iron from oral supplements due to gastrointestinal issues or other factors. Iron infusions bypass the digestive system, delivering iron directly into the bloodstream and ensuring a higher absorption rate. This is especially helpful for individuals with conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can interfere with nutrient absorption.

  3. Reduced Gastrointestinal Side Effects: Oral iron supplements can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and stomach discomfort. Iron infusions avoid these issues since the iron is introduced directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive tract.

  4. Improved Quality of Life: Iron deficiency anemia can lead to fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating. Iron infusions can provide rapid relief from these symptoms, leading to an improved quality of life and increased energy levels.

  5. Effective Treatment for Certain Conditions: Iron infusions are often used when oral iron supplementation is ineffective or impractical. Conditions such as chronic kidney disease, celiac disease, and gastrointestinal disorders may necessitate iron infusions for adequate treatment.

  6. Higher Dose Delivery: In some cases, the required dose of iron may be too high to achieve through oral supplementation alone. Iron infusions allow healthcare providers to deliver higher doses of iron in a controlled manner.

  7. Tailored Treatment: Iron infusions can be tailored to an individual's specific needs, taking into account factors like their iron deficiency severity, underlying health conditions, and response to previous treatments.

It's important to note that while iron infusions offer several benefits, they are not without potential risks and side effects. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions, infection at the infusion site, or other adverse events. Therefore, the decision to undergo iron infusions should always be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional who can assess the individual's medical history, current health status, and treatment needs.
